Winter Camping UK: How to Stay Warm in a Tent (Sleep System Guide)

The short answer to winter camping in the UK: stay warm by insulating from the ground first, then the air around you. A sleeping mat with a high R-value (4 or more on frozen ground), a sleeping bag matched to the coldest night you expect, dry layers kept just for bed, and a hot drink before you turn in will do more than any single piece of expensive kit. Cold gets to you through the floor far faster than through the tent walls, so build your sleep system from the bottom up.

Why do I get cold in a tent in winter?

There are three culprits: the ground, damp, and draughts. When you lie down, the sleeping bag filling under your body is squashed flat and stops insulating, so your mat does that job. If the mat is thin, heat drains straight into the cold ground all night.

Damp is the second problem. Your breath adds moisture to the tent and wet clothing or a wet bag loses its warmth. Pitch out of the wind, keep vents open a little, and never wear the layers you hiked in to bed.

What sleeping mat do I need for winter camping in the UK?

Choose the mat before the sleeping bag. Mat insulation is measured as R-value, and a higher number means less heat lost to the ground. As Sea to Summit's R-value guide explains, the figures come from the ASTM F3340-18 test, and snowy or frozen ground calls for a mat rated 4 or higher. For mild, unfrosted ground, an R-value of around 1 can be enough, which is why a summer mat is a poor winter mat.

Many UK trips fall in between, with cold, wet ground but no snow. A simple trick is to stack two mats: a closed-cell foam mat underneath with an inflatable on top. The foam adds insulation and acts as a backup if the air mat punctures.

800g, 195 x 65 x 6cm, with a built-in foot pump. No R-value is listed, so pair it with a foam mat underneath for frosty nights.

How warm does my sleeping bag need to be?

Match the bag to the coldest night you expect, not the average. Check the comfort rating rather than the "extreme" figure, which is a survival number. As a rule of thumb, buy a bag whose comfort rating is a few degrees below the forecast low, then add warmth with layers if you can.

Down gives the most warmth for its weight and packs small, but it must stay dry. Synthetic fill keeps insulating when damp and is easier to wash. Here is how three bags in our range compare, using the figures from each product listing:

Sleeping bag Fill Weight Listed rating Price
Naturehike Duck Down 400g duck down About 910g (M) Described as all-season, no temperature rating listed £130
Exped Deepsleep (M) Recycled polyester 1260g Comfort 6°C, limit 1°C £90
Bushmen Walker 1 Polyester, 120g/sqm 780g to 880g Comfort +13°C men, +16°C women From £76

Be realistic about what these are. The Exped Deepsleep is a summer and autumn bag with a 6°C comfort rating, and the Bushmen Walker is best used as a liner inside a warmer bag. Neither is a stand-alone bag for a frosty night. The Naturehike down bag is our lightest warm option, but because no temperature rating is listed, treat it as a core bag to build on with a liner and dry layers rather than relying on it alone below freezing.

What should I wear to bed in a tent?

Wear a dry set of clothes that never leaves the tent: clean base layer, dry socks, and a warm hat. A lot of heat leaves through your head, and a waterproof, fleece-lined beanie also protects you if condensation drips from the tent roof. Do not wear so much that you compress the bag filling or sweat, because damp undoes the warmth you are trying to build.

How do I keep warm before bed and in the morning?

Go to bed warm. Do a few minutes of light activity, eat something hot and fatty, and have a hot drink before you get in. Your body generates heat from food, so a warm meal is as useful as an extra layer. A sleeping bag only holds the heat you bring to it, so climbing in cold wastes most of its work.

A fire-powered kettle is a good winter companion because it boils fast and burns twigs rather than gas, which can struggle in the cold. The Kelly Kettle Trekker kit weighs 1.17kg and includes a 0.6L kettle, a cook set and a small hobo stove. Check local rules before lighting any fire, and remember that open fires are not appropriate in most wild camping spots.

Frequently asked questions

Is winter wild camping in the UK safe?

It can be, with preparation. Check the mountain forecast, carry a warm sleep system and spare dry clothing, tell someone your route, and be ready to walk out if conditions worsen. Wild camping rules differ by country, so check the landowner or local rules for where you are going.

What temperature is too cold to camp in a tent?

There is no single number. It depends on your bag and mat, your clothing and your experience. Choose a bag whose comfort rating covers the forecast low, and make your first cold trips short and close to the car.

How do I stop condensation in my tent in winter?

Pitch out of the wind but away from wet ground, keep vents open a little even when it is cold, and avoid cooking inside the tent. Wipe down the inner in the morning and pack it separately so it can dry.

Do I need a four-season tent for winter camping in the UK?

Not for every trip. A sturdy, well-pitched three-season tent copes with most cold UK nights without snow, but strong winds or snow loading call for a stronger shelter. Browse the tents collection to compare.

Should I put my sleeping mat inside my sleeping bag?

No. The mat goes underneath the bag. Putting it inside compresses the filling above you and doesn't stop the heat loss through the ground.
