Embracing the Great Outdoors with Merino Wool: A Hiker's Companion

Embracing the Great Outdoors with Merino Wool: A Hiker's Companion

The Marvels of Merino Wool

Merino Wool has long been the secret champion of outdoor enthusiasts and adventurers. Born from the rugged terrains of New Zealand and Australia, where the Merino sheep thrive, this natural fibre has evolved to become synonymous with performance and comfort.

Why Merino for Hiking and Camping?

Temperature Regulation

One of the most critical challenges in the wild is maintaining a comfortable body temperature. Merino Wool excels in this regard. Its natural crimp helps to trap body heat during cold conditions while its breathability allows for the release of excess heat when temperatures rise. If you are anything like me, I run extremely warm when hiking. I'm the kind person you see at the peak of a mountain nearing sub zero temperatures, with sweat still running down my face, keeping my layers to the bare minimum when everyone else is wrapping up.

Merino Wool is ideal with its warming properties as it means I don't need to layer up so much. When I stop for a break it stops me getting cold too quickly and retains my body heat.

Moisture-Wicking

Moisture is a hiker's nemesis. Unlike synthetic materials that can leave you feeling clammy, Merino fibres can absorb and release moisture, keeping you dry as you traverse creeks or climb peaks. You will often find that there is a large range of base layers sold that are made primarily Merino Wool. It serves as the perfect material that draws excess moisture from your skin, which works perfect in combination of a good quality and breathable waterproof layer.

Soft and Comfortable

Forget the itchiness associated with traditional wool. Merino fibres are exceptionally fine, resulting in a soft, non-irritating touch against the skin, which is crucial for those long days on the trail. There are many items of clothing that are now made with Merino Wool, but one of my personal favourites is a good quality Merino Wool hat. There is nothing worse than an itchy head especially if you also have your hood up and/or are using a headtorch.

Enhanced Durability with Intelligent Blending

While the natural resilience of Merino Wool is remarkable, it's common to find that many Merino Wool products include a blend of other materials. This might initially raise questions for purists who cherish the 100% wool composition. However, these blends are carefully engineered to boost the already impressive durability and shape retention of Merino Wool.

Nylon, for example, is often woven with Merino fibres to reinforce the inherent strength of the wool, ensuring that items like socks and base layers can withstand the rigors of rigorous hikes and repeated washings. Acrylic may be added to enhance the wool's ability to hold colour and resist fading. Meanwhile, a touch of spandex or elastane grants the fabric extra stretchability, which means your wool garment can hug the body snugly without constraining movement or losing form over time.

It's a testament to modern textile innovation that these blends do not compromise the wool's natural properties. They enhance them, ensuring that your Merino Wool gear remains as comfortable, breathable, and odour-resistant as ever. The result is a garment that embodies the best of both worlds: the unparalleled benefits of Merino with the added endurance and performance that modern outdoor activities demand.

Odour Resistance

After a day of hiking, campfire camaraderie is often marred by the odour of sweat-soaked clothing. Merino Wool's natural properties reduce the build-up of unpleasant smells, so you can wear it longer with less funk. This makes Merino Wool ideal for backpacking as well as your everyday hiking and camping. The fact that they are odour resistant means that you can often get away with wearing the same pair for a couple of days if you are trying to keep your pack light. A good tip if you are really trying to keep weight to a minimum and retain as much bag space as possible, is to just pack 1 pair for every 2 days of your trip. This way you can alternate them and allow them a day to breathe and dry out.

Quick Drying

If you get caught in a downpour or need to wash your gear on multi-day trips, as mentioned above, Merino Wool dries significantly faster than cotton and most synthetics, making it ideal for outdoor pursuits. There is nothing worse than having to put on clothing from the day before that is still wet! Especially in the colder months.

Versatility in the Wilderness

Merino Wool's benefits extend beyond individual comfort. Its versatility makes it suitable for a range of clothing as mentioned in the above, from socks that keep your feet blister-free to base layers that manage body temperature, to insulating mid-layers and protective outer layers. Usually with a slightly higher price tag than other materials, we believe that the extra few pounds is well worth the investment.

Sustainable and Ethical Choice

For the eco-conscious hiker, Merino Wool is a sustainable choice. It's a renewable resource that biodegrades, reducing the environmental footprint. Ethical practices in the farming of Merino Wool also ensure the wellbeing of the sheep, making it a conscientious choice for nature lovers.
