The Taiji 2 is the tent we'd pick for UK hills when the forecast can't be trusted. Three crossing poles make a proper freestanding dome that shrugs off wind and snow load, yet the whole thing is just 1.8kg (tent and poles) and packs to 45 x 16cm. Fly and inner pitch together, so you're under cover in minutes even in the rain, and with a door and porch on each side there's no climbing over each other at 3am.

- Great for: wild camping, winter and shoulder-season trips, exposed pitches, DofE Gold and expeditions.
- Look elsewhere if: you want the absolute lightest shelter for summer. The Lanshan 2 Pro is about 800g lighter but needs trekking poles. For mainly spring-to-autumn use, the Taiji 2 3-season has a mesh inner for better airflow.
Good to know
It stands up without pegs, but always peg it out and use the guylines in wind. That's what lets the dome handle a proper storm.
